Most of the books and the articles I read are focused on how to do good for people. I am trained as a Change Agent. Over the years I have read almost everything there is about what works and what does not work to ,otivate people to make positive changes.
I have several degrees in how to Manage and Motivate Change. One degree is in teaching, another in organizing systems to promote growth and change and a doctorate in healing and growth of mental and emotional issues.

Our most recent book, "Hope and Change for Humpty Dumpty" has many of the principles that work in it. We have summarized the core principles and made them available to ministers, educators, counselors, coaches and consultants. Steve Griebling and I often teach on those principles to people who wish to grow as change agents.

Hope and change. Sounds like Barack Obama's message.
Norma, In my view, Senator Obama is wonderful in at least one key element of motivating change. He has the ability to Inspire groups and individuals with hope and expectation.
When Mr. Obama speaks his voice and demeanor are warm, genuine and respectful and he seems so genuinely nice that it is disarming and very attractive.
In the Humpty Dumpty book I lay out the core conditions of a change agent with the acrostic, GREW: Genuineness, Respect, Empathy and Warmth. Mr. Obama has all of those attributes. It remains to be seen if he can put the action required to be an effective change agent.
Inspiration without action can lead to fanaticism and finally to depression because nothing gets done. I hope he can accomplish important activities but I am not sure he can. JFK was inspirational but a disaster at policies and taking proper actions. However, he could certainly preach.
I have been around great preachers and teachers all my life. Most of them can not lead. They must hire others who can do the stuff but they often rest on oration as the way to lead through inspiration and fail to do the hard work of organizational development. As a rule, orators can orate but cannot manage.
